Phase 1: Online Digital Sports Combine.

Participants will be encouraged to enter the Digital Combine phase of The Showcase.

Athletes will over a 10-week period be given a combination of sport specific conditioning drills to complete.

These drills have been designed in consultation with industry specialists and have been modelled on international best practice. Special consideration has been given to the vastly different levels of privilege and also access to facilities each athlete has during the design of these drills which will determine the speed, strength, explosiveness, agility and skill level of each athlete, depending on the sport, age and gender of the athletes.

These drills need to be completed at home and the results submitted digitally to The Showcase platform. The Organisers shall, with the assistance and support of sports specific sports conditioners, phycologists and ambassadors seek to guide, educate and encourage participants to improve their test results throughout the 10-week period of Phase 1.

Regular leaderboards, rankings and best performers will be showcased during this phase which will eventually culminate in an invitation of the top performers to proceed to Phase 2.

Phase 2: Live Arena Sports Combine.

The best and invited athletes from Phase 1 will participate in a live combine event, in a sports arena.

Here participants will compete against each other and have the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of an audience of talent seekers, agents, varsity and high school recruiters, bursary givers, scouts and professional sports team coaches or whomever would be interested in watching the evaluation of the athletes.

A lucky few will no doubt be offered contracts, bursaries, or end up on watch lists of some of the top talent scouts in South Africa. Phase 2 of the Combine will be broadcast and streamed live on Showcase platforms.

Phase 3: School Sport Festival

Phase 3 will be in the form of a school sport’s festival. Think Cape Town 10s combined with the Wildeklawer and popular Easter School Festivals held each year.

U18 and u12 teams will be invited to participate in a two-day sports festival where no less than 5 matches will be played by each participating team.

What is a Sports Combine?

A sports combine is usually a combination of certain sport specific conditioning drills to determine speed, strength and skill level depending on the sport. These abilities are put on display for coaches, scouts and whomever would be interested in watching the evaluation of the athlete.  For the athlete it is a chance to display your abilities, speed, strength and skill set for a specific sport. It usually involves some kind of weight lifting, agility drills, sprinting and depending on the sport a set of specific sport drills. Example for rugby would be a scrumhalf making all the required passes he would have to make in a game and for a goal shoot in netball to make all the shots at goal she has to take during a match.

Why use a combine to test the athletes?

The good thing about the combine is that you can compare athletes at the same position doing the same drills in the same place on the same surface at the same time. That can be valuable because there is no change in the testing conditions.

Where does the combine come from?

Combines have been used to Showcase and confirm athletic and position specific skill for more than 40 years in the USA. The NFL Combine is the premier talent identification program of the NFL in America and is attended by virtually every talent scout in the sport in order to see the best talent on show.

What are the testing protocols?

Athletes will have to do tests that showcases Speed, Agility, Strength and Explosiveness. Also refer to the TEST SECTION of the website: Netball and Rugby.

Speed Test: This will be in the form of a 10m (netball) and 40m (rugby) sprint test.

Agility Test: This will consist of a 5-10-5 drill.

Strength Test: This will be tested for both girls and boys over a 1minute hands-up-hands down push up test.

Explosiveness Test: This will be done via jumps. Both a Broad and a vertical jump test.

Please refer to the Tests Section (Netball and Rugby.) of the website to see and learn more about the tests.

What if I submit the wrong test results or manipulate my tests in order to untruthfully attempt to qualify for Phase 2

All results submitted during Phase 1 will be scrutinised by strength & conditioning specialists and benchmarked against norms for the specific age groups and genders tested. Any outliers and or data entries that do not make sense or do not correlate to data sets collected will be subject to individual spot checks. The organisers reserves their rights to perform ad-hoc audits of data. This could include the request for results to be performed in front of a teacher or mentor and to be verified by submission of video evidence. Eventually all athletes who are invited to Phase 2 will have to have their final submissions to gain eligibility for the Phase 2 event verified by an independent third party.

If I’m not selected for the live combine, what can I do?

Once the selections have been made and the participant list is finalized, any athlete who is not invited to the live combine should continue training. The Showcase will be run annually and you could be part of the Class of 2021. Also remember that Phase 3 consists of a sports day where you will play rugby or netball in a team format which will be another opportunity for you to showcase your talent and skills.

Online registration is closed but will I be able to register onsite at the Phase 2 Live Combine?

No, only invited and participants who have qualified will be invited to the Live Event.

Can I go to the Live Showcase Event to watch?

This will depend on Covid-19 regulations. Currently the only people allowed to attend, depending on Covid-19, will be invited scouts, coaches, agents and other talent identifiers. We are in discussions with broadcasters to broadcast The Showcase live on television and YouTube for all to see.

I won't be able to attend the event can I give my Showcase invitation to my teammate?

No. This invitation is non-transferable and is tied to your personal information. If you are not able to compete in the second phase of The Showcase we will invite the next athlete that meets the criteria.

How long does the digital Phase 1 Showcase last?

Phase 1 will last between 10 and 12 x weeks. During this phase athletes will have to submit their test battery results at regular intervals. The idea is for athletes to understand the exercises and gradually increase their test results in order to increase their chances of making the list of invited athletes to attend the Live Event and compete for the ultimate prize.

How do I get my official Showcase results?

You will leave The Showcase with this in hand. You will receive an email after the event with a certificate indicating your athletic journey and progression.

What if I don’t submit my test results on time?

All athletes have to complete all test results in order to be eligible for the grand participation prize. In order to qualify for Phase 2 of The Showcase athletes need to complete at least 3 of the 5 test battery phases.

I don’t live in East London or Cape Town and have qualified for Phase 2, what do I need to do?

You or your parents, guardians, coaches or teachers need to make sure they can arrange for you to attend the Live Combine event. Organisers will assist with recommendations on places to stay and modes of travel to the Live Combines but your invite, once qualified, will unfortunately not include the travel and accommodation to attend the event.

Will there be sport-specific drills at the Live Showcase?

Yes. The same tests performed during Phase 1 will be tested by qualified instructors and with specialised testing equipment. Certain position specific drills and tests may also be added to this phase in order to help the audience of coaches, scouts, agents and talent identifiers to better understand and see your skills.

Where will the Phase 2 Live Combine be hosted?

There will be 2 x live Showcase events. One in East London in the Eastern Cape, and one in Cape Town. These Events will be hosted in a sports arena. The exact venue and details will be announced towards the end of Phase 1

What if for some unforeseen reason cannot attend Phase 2 after being selected and invited to attend?

Unfortunately, we will only host one Live event per city and you will have to forfeit your opportunity to participate.

I’m an agent, parent or coach and I have a player I believe may have been overlooked. How do I get him into The Showcase Scouting Combine?

It is extremely unlikely that a player was “overlooked” during the selection process. However, he may not have been selected by the committee after being reviewed. Agents, parents and coaches do not have access to this anonymous committee; but may contact The Showcase office, details on the Contact Us Page if they have a realistic concern about a top player who was not invited. Please be certain that your request is valid, as this is not an opportunity to lobby for players.

How do I know if I will be invited to the Live Event hosted during Phase 2

Test results of Phase 1 will be analysed and benchmarked against international and national fitness norms as developed and used by SA Rugby and Netball South Africa to test athletes on their elite player development programmes. Results will also be compared against results of all other athletes competing in Phase 1. From this the top 10% of participants will be selected to attend the live event.

When will Phase 3 of The Showcase take place

Phase 3 will depend on availability on the school calendar and restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Once more information is available here on details around this event including venues, dates, entry fees and other information will be announced.
